This presentation will provide you with an exclusive preview of the brand new KCKCC Digital Mural project. KCKCC will commemorate its 100th anniversary year with the unveiling of a 74 sq. ft. digital mural depicting Wyandotte County and KCKCC history from 11,500 BC to present day. The 2-year planning process combined community surveying, archival research, oral history interviews, and digital design guided by the expertise of a Historical Advisory Committee. Research gathered will be displayed alongside the mural on interactive screens for a multimedia learning experience. A digital historical timeline will also be integrated on screens as an educational tool for students and community alike.
As part of the college’s “Ambient Spaces” project, meant to modernize and beautify high-trafficked areas on-campus, the mural will be placed in the Jewell building on the College’s campus at 72nd and State Avenue. Final design will be completed Spring 2021. The finished project is scheduled to be revealed this Summer. The mural is just one part of preparation of the College’s 100th anniversary in 2023.

The mural project is spearheaded by the KCKCC Gallery and Intercultural Center, in collaboration with Tico Productions, LLC; KCKCC students; and a historical advisory committee comprised of local experts and institutions. Committee members include local historians and representatives from Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area, Wyandotte County Historical Museum, Kansas City Kansas Public Library, KCKCC, Old Quindaro Museum, and the Wyandot Nation of Kansas.
The mural project began in August 2019 with the goal of creating an inclusive and accurate representation of historical diversity in Wyandotte County. Curators have been researching a variety of topics to build a historical foundation, including neighborhoods, cultural groups, and iconic places.
